Etching snowflakes on glass with your Cricut stencil

Writer's picture: Joyce MayJoyce May
  1. Download snowflakes SVG from the web and save to your desktop.

  2. Upload the file in Design Space.

  3. Make a rectangle around the snowflake. I made the height of the rectangle the height of my glass, so this is useful to ensure the placement of the snowflake is where I need it to be. When making multiple items and they need to be identical, this can be beneficial.

4. Make it and cut out the stencil using an adhesive vinyl. Put a layer of transfer sheet on top of the snowflake design to keep design in place. I used a transparent book wrap.

Transfer stencil onto glass surface and remove transparent transfer sheet.

5. Use your heat gun and go over all the stencil area so that there are no air bubbles at all. It will be difficult to see the air bubbles but without doing this step the etching cream will get into it and destroy your design.

6. Open etching cream (I used Silhouette etching cream) and give it a good stir, using a brush or a chopstick. Apply etching cream to the stencil. The first time I did it, the etching cream was too runny and drip all over (hence the big rectangle would have been good to avoid other spots getting etched accidentally).

7. Leave it for 20 minutes (just to be sure, but you could try 5 minutes). You could use your brush to transfer the etching cream back into your original bottle if you wish to reuse it. Wash glass under water and remove etching cream.
